Memantine has served as quite the powerful drug able to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, and it is now one of the few effective drugs against its symptoms and signs. Although this medication is not able to cure Alzheimer's disease or any known disease or disorder until now, it is still worth giving it a try knowing all of its beneficial effects meant to improve your quality of life and wellbeing. In the following post, we will discuss all this superdrug.
Memantine is a prescribed drug that is used to treat severe dementia in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Although Memantine is able to reduce the symptoms of dementia, patients must understand that this drug has no power over the progress of the disease, which means that it will never stop or slow down the disease itself.
Although Memantine is now being used to treat the symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease patients, when it was first synthesized back in 1968, Memantine was meant to treat diabetes. But, evidently things have changed and now patients struggling with Alzheimer’s disease all around the world can lean on to Memantine for support! But Memantine serves as much more than just as an approved treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, Memantine is also commonly being recommended and prescribed by doctors worldwide for the symptoms of ADHD (attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder) and bipolar disorder.
What is interesting to know about Memantine is the fact that Memantine, along with four other medications, forms the group of the only medications which have been approved and are considered to be the only effective ones to treat the cognitive decline that occurs in Alzheimer’s disease. But of these four, Memantine stands for itself. That is because the other four medications work by inhibiting the most important neurotransmitter in the human brain – acetylcholine whereas Memantine works by blocking the NMDA receptors.
We already mentioned that Memantine has nothing to do with acetylcholine so you may wonder – how does it do what it does? Well, Memantine focuses on the NMDA receptors and glutamine. Glutamine is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It is believed that too much glutamine causes nerve degeneration which is commonly found in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. And because glutamine normally travels to the NMDA receptors after it is being released from the nerve cells in the body, Memantine focuses on blocking these exact receptors so that the effects of glutamine would be decreased gradually. This is believed to cause the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease to reduce.
Researchers found that Memantine can be used to treat the symptoms of ADHD (attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder), formerly known as ADD. This was stated in research which investigated and compared the effects caused by Memantine and Methylphenidate, a commonly used drug to treat the symptoms of ADHD, in patients with ADHD. The research showed that both drugs caused similar effects in the participants, improving their symptoms effectively.
Memantine is known to improve the patient’s well-being, sleep quality, increase the mental alertness and reduce the fatigue among other positive effects, all of which in return increase the patient’s energy levels and quality of life effectively.
A study showed that Memantine was able to effectively reduce the manic symptoms and episodes in bipolar disorder patients. But that is not all – Memantine was also able to improve the patient’s well-being, his sleep quality, reduce the anxiety and depression symptoms as well.
Memantine was also used to treat the anxiety symptoms in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) as a part of scientific research. What the research showed was that Memantine was able to reduce the anxiety symptoms after 12 weeks, improving their quality of life.
We have scientific proof that Memantine is a superdrug, effectively treating and reducing the number and severity of headaches and migraines among its users. The participants of the trail have reported experiencing about 3.4 fewer migraines per month as well as experience a reduced number of cluster headaches that did not respond to any previous treatment before.
Memantine is produced only in the form of oral capsules, for oral use only. The usual dose at the beginning of the treatment is 5mg/day, only to be later increased to 5 mg twice a day. The capsule can be swallowed whole, or you can choose to break the capsule and intake its contents along with some apple juice in a spoon. Memantine can be taken with or without food, as instructed by your doctor. You should never chew the capsule in your mouth. Avoid any chances of an overdose by remembering your prescribed dose and taking your medication as instructed.
Unfortunately, the use of Memantine rarely ends up without any side-effects. Although side-effects are commonly present in patients, usually, it is mild side-effects that we are talking about. If you are experiencing severe side-effects, we encourage you to schedule an appointment at your doctor's right away and talk about their presence and severity together. Usually, the side-effects, it occurred in their mild version, will go away on their own in a few days or weeks. You can ask your doctor to share some tips and techniques on how to cope with these side-effects the best that you can. In the following, we will share some of the most common side-effects caused by Memantine.
There is a rare chance for an allergic reaction to the medication to occur. If so, look for characteristic signs such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, throat, and tongue, severe dizziness and trouble breathing. If you notice any of these signs, please call 911 right away!
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please do not forget to mention that to your doctor before you proceed to take this medication. Unfortunately, no scientific research speaks of the possible effects that Memantine has or has not on the fetus or whether or not passes in the breast milk.
If you are using any other medications at the moment, please do consult your doctor before you proceed to take this medication. There is a slight chance that Memantine can interact with your other medication/s and cause certain signs to occur.
Memantine works by blocking the NMDA receptors and reducing the effects of glutamine with one sole propose – to reduce the nerve degeneration that is guilty of the occurrence of symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease patients and many others. This prescribed drug is also used to treat bipolar disorder patients, ADHD patients, patients with migraines and headaches and so on. Perhaps, this superdrug will be able to help you as well!
